Is it true that background checks include past drug test results?

I was filling out an application and the background check paper that was part of it. And I read the statement on the paper that said it can include credit reports. What's the purpose of getting a credit report as part of the job application process? And I also read that it COULD include past drug test results? Is THAT true too? Sheesh!
